Lightning was one of several code names for a high performance, multi-language, managed execution system for COM+. It eventually became the .NET Common Language Runtime (CLR) which is now an integral part of the .NET Framework.

Denali was the code name for the data-driven Web server technology that became Active Server Pages and shipped in Internet Information Server 3.0. Denali (the "High One") was the name the Athabascan people gave the massive peak crowning the Alaskan range, which American explorers called Mt. McKinley.

Asteroid was the codename for Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.

Whistler was the codename for Windows XP.

Whidbey and Orcas were the codenames for Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio 2008 respectively. They were named after Whidbey Island and Orcas Island a good distance away from Seattle.

Rosario was the codename for Visual Studio 2010. Rosario Strait passes Orcas Island and Rosario is also the second most important city in Argentina.

Avalon was the codename for WPF.

Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere  or WPF/E was the codename for Silverlight.
